Middle East: Palestinians: One dead in clash in West Bank

The security situation in Israel and the West Bank remains tense. Now the situation has escalated again.

According to Palestinian sources, a man was killed in clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli military in the West Bank on Thursday night. Three other Palestinians were injured, two of them seriously, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah said.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the Palestinian killed was 19 years old. The clashes broke out when Israeli soldiers secured Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus for hundreds of settlers to visit. Shots were fired and tear gas was used.

The army said on Twitter that there had been clashes with Palestinians during a visit by Jewish believers to Joseph’s tomb. They threw explosives and stones at security forces. The army responded with shots. There have been injuries.

Nearly 150 Palestinians killed since the beginning of the year

According to tradition, Joseph’s grave is the final resting place of the biblical figure Joseph, son of the patriarch Jacob. Jews, Christians and Muslims alike worship the tomb. It has repeatedly been a target of violence in the past. Jews are only allowed to enter the West Bank site with permission.

The security situation in Israel and the West Bank has been tense for a long time, and violence has recently increased again. Since the beginning of the year, 25 people have died in attacks by Palestinians. During the same period, 158 Palestinians were killed in violent clashes, Israeli military operations or in their own attacks.
