Alexei Navalny has been in prison for two years. In a new trial, the Russian prosecutor is asking for another 20 years.
In the new trial against Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, who has already been imprisoned, the Russian public prosecutor’s office has requested a further 20 years in a prison camp. This was announced by the 47-year-old’s team.
The trial is taking place behind closed doors in the Melechowo penal camp, where Navalny is also serving his previous sentence. According to this information, the verdict is to be announced on August 4th.
The judiciary has accused the prominent opponent of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin of extremism. In all, the public prosecutor brought forward seven counts of charges, including founding and financing an extremist organization and downplaying National Socialism.
Navalny, who has been in prison for two years, is internationally considered a political prisoner. He could even face up to 30 years in a prison camp. He rejects all allegations as political staging.
Navalny’s supporters repeatedly criticize the fact that the trial is not being held in a courtroom, but in the penal colony around 260 kilometers from Moscow. Navalny was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok during a trip to Siberia in the summer of 2020. He accuses the Russian domestic secret service FSB of being behind the assassination. After treatment in Germany, he returned to his homeland despite the threat of imprisonment and new trials. He was arrested at the airport.
