The CDU politician Frei caused a stir with his asylum initiative. Outrage is spreading, especially in the SPD. One speaks of “duplicity”.
After CDU chairman Friedrich Merz backed his party colleague Thorsten Frei’s proposal for a U-turn in asylum policy, outrage grew in the ranks of the SPD. “Freely supports quota solutions – but he and his parliamentary group have recently repeatedly spoken out massively against the admission program and quota for Afghanistan,” criticized SPD domestic politician Helge Lindh. “That gives the impression of cheap duplicity,” said the member of the Bundestag.
The federal chairman of the working group on migration and diversity in the SPD, Aziz Bozkurt, senses party tactics behind the proposal. He said: “The desperation and the summer slump in the Union must be great” if Merz defends Frei’s push to abolish the right to asylum.
The advance
The parliamentary manager of the Union faction, Thorsten Frei (CDU), had proposed a change in the system of asylum policy. In a guest article for the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, he called for the right of individuals to apply for asylum on German soil to be abolished.
It should be replaced by quotas for taking in refugees in Europe. These 300,000 to 400,000 refugees per year should be selected directly from abroad and then distributed in Europe.
Merz had welcomed the proposal. At the exam of the CSU state group, the Union faction leader said on Wednesday: “This is an important and good contribution to solving a problem that we have seen for years and where there are currently no really good and convincing solutions.”
