Iran’s metropolises have changed since the massive protests last fall. Many women are now resisting the obligation to wear a headscarf – but the state is reacting.
Iran’s authorities have sealed the headquarters of the country’s largest online retailer for disregarding the headscarf requirement. The building of the Internet retailer Digikala in the capital Tehran was locked, as the newspaper “Shargh” reported. Group photos of the workforce had previously appeared, in which some women were not wearing the obligatory headscarf. Online orders should still be possible.
For months, many women have been demonstratively ignoring the Islamic dress codes that apply in Iran. In response, the state reactivated the notorious guardians of morals, who use patrols to monitor compliance with the dress code a few days ago. In autumn 2022, the death of the young Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested by the vice squad, triggered the most serious protests in decades.
