Conflicts: Sudan: 3.3 million displaced after 100 days of conflict

In Sudan, an extremely bloody internal conflict has been taking place since April. Millions of people are fleeing. UN High Commissioner Grandi calls for a quick end to the violence.

According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, more than 3.3 million people have been displaced since the conflict broke out in Sudan 100 days ago. The organization reports that around 740,000 of them fled to neighboring countries.

“This has to stop,” demands the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi. “It is time for all parties to the conflict to end this tragic war immediately,” he says. Until a dialogue between the sides has started, the refugees must be protected from violence.

The conditions in the host countries of Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Chad and the Central African Republic are “horrible”, the UNHCR complained in its statement. Refugee centers are overcrowded, and in Sudan the many internally displaced people are struggling with similar capacity problems.

According to the UNHCR, the current rainy season is making the work of the aid organizations and the transport of the refugees more difficult. In addition, those affected would suffer from the sharply rising prices for food and fuel, it is said.

In the country in northeast Africa, the army under President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has been fighting the RSF paramilitary militia of former deputy ruler Mohammed Hamdan Daglo since mid-April. The generals had seized power together, but then fell out.
