Mückstein suggests lockdown for unvaccinated people in Upper Austria and Salzburg

According to Salzburg’s governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP), Mückstein has proposed regional lockdowns for unvaccinated people in the two countries that are severely affected by the pandemic. There was still no agreement at the conversation, in which the Upper Austrian Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) was also present. The talks will continue, the ministry announced afterwards.

Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) sees a regional lockdown as critical. In his federal state, the question arises whether the development in the intensive care units actually makes it necessary to move forward to level 5. “Thank God there are many intensive care beds,” said the governor. In addition, a “very strict measure” only came into force on Monday with the 2G rule. “We need an overview of what they are bringing”, whether they can not get the situation under control.

There is “agreement that action must be taken quickly, clearly and decisively,” says the written communication from Mückstein’s office. It was “an open conversation”. The talks would now be continued on a technical level and then in a further round with the state governors. Tomorrow, Thursday, it will be discussed with experts whether bringing forward level 5 – i.e. a lockdown for unvaccinated people – makes sense in the two federal states.

A general lockdown – also for vaccinated people – had ÖVP Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg rejected shortly before the start of the conversation.
