In a “historic resolution” at the end of its four-day plenary session in Beijing, the high party body decided “that it is necessary to persevere in upholding Comrade Xi Jinping’s position as the core of the party’s central committee and the core of the party.”
In the run-up to the party congress in the fall of next year, the Central Committee is paving the way for Xi Jinping’s plans for a third term in office or perhaps even longer. After 1945 and 1981, it is only the third time in the 100-year history of the Communist Party that a document has been adopted in this form. The resolution is intended to show China the way for decades.
The Central Committee is practically giving Xi Jinping a mandate for a permanent term in office – as the first leader since the revolutionary and state founder Mao Tsetung. With this goal in mind, the limits on terms of office that had previously been in force were abolished in 2018. The party elite sits in the Central Committee, including party and government leaders, provincial leaders and generals.
