For months, many women in Iran have been ignoring the Islamic dress codes that still apply and do not wear a headscarf. President Ebrahim Raisi no longer wants to accept this.
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has threatened women without a headscarf with consequences for numerous violations of Islamic dress codes. “The spread of removing the hijab will definitely be stopped,” said the arch-conservative cleric. “Some people without the hijab are not aware of this, so we should admonish them, but some of them are accompanying the enemy’s plan.”
For months, women in Iran’s metropolises have been demonstratively ignoring Islamic dress codes, also as a sign of silent protest. Hardliners in the country of nearly 90 million people are calling for tougher action to be taken against the abuses. As a consequence, the government has already drafted a highly controversial law that provides for draconian penalties for violations.
Mid-September marks the first anniversary of the death of protest icon Jina Mahsa Amini. The young woman was arrested in autumn 2022 because of an allegedly ill-fitting headscarf. After her death in police custody, the worst protests in decades broke out in Iran.
