Russia: Heavy explosion at factory near Moscow

At least 45 people are said to have been injured in an explosion at a factory near Moscow. Is there a drone attack behind it?

According to official information, at least 45 people were injured in a violent explosion in the city of Sergiyev Posad, around 70 kilometers northeast of Moscow.

The explosion occurred in a pyrotechnics warehouse rented by a company on a company premises in the city, the administration of Sergiyev Posad said on Telegram. According to initial findings, disregarded safety precautions are the reason for the incident.

Observers on social networks had previously suspected that the factory, which produces optical devices for military use, among other things, could have been the target of a drone attack.

Photos and videos showed a large column of smoke rising in the sky. A fire will be extinguished in around 50 square meters, it said. The rubble is also being searched for people who may have been buried. Nearby buildings were damaged and evacuated.

Russia, which has been waging a war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine for more than 17 months, has itself increasingly become the target of enemy drone attacks in recent weeks. The capital Moscow was particularly affected. However, damage and the number of victims bear no relation to the consequences of the war in the attacked Ukraine.
