The US President has not yet officially declared a climate emergency, even though the White House considered the step last year. “In practical terms,” Biden assesses the situation differently.
US President Joe Biden says he wants to have “practically” declared a national climate emergency. In an interview with The Weather Channel broadcast today, Biden was asked if he was ready to declare a climate emergency. “I have already done that,” he replied.
The Democrat referred to the measures taken by his government to protect the climate and his decision to return to the Paris climate agreement. When the journalist asked again whether he had actually declared a climate emergency, the 80-year-old replied: “In practical terms, yes”.
So far, Biden has not officially declared a climate emergency. The measure would give the US government more leeway to mobilize funds to fight climate change. The White House considered such a step last year when the so-called Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which also contains extensive measures for climate protection, got stuck in the US Congress at times. Climate activists also argue that an emergency regulation could serve as a legal basis to block oil and gas drilling and impose penalties on countries that allow illegal logging. Biden once again described climate change as an “existential threat to humanity”.
