Ukraine wants Germany to launch Taurus cruise missiles, but the German government has so far hesitated. Now the weapons are supposed to be delivered soon, but possibly only after a modification.
According to media reports, there are signs of movement in the debate about the Ukrainian demand for German Taurus cruise missiles. The federal government is examining how Germany can supply Ukraine with Taurus from Bundeswehr stocks in the coming months, the “Spiegel” reported. Talks were being held between the Ministry of Defense and the defense industry. The news portal “t-online” reported on Thursday, citing SPD circles, that the government wanted to announce the delivery “soon”.
The “Spiegel” also said that the Ministry of Defense had asked the Taurus manufacturer to integrate a limitation for target programming in the cruise missiles. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) wants to use technical modifications to prevent Ukraine from carrying out attacks on Russian territory with the long-range weapon systems. According to the report, industry circles said that such a restriction of the system is quite possible, but will take a few weeks.
The Ukraine demands Taurus-type cruise missiles from Berlin in order to be able to attack positions of the Russian armed forces far behind the front line. The federal government has so far been reluctant because the projectiles can also reach Russian territory. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) said last week that “this is not our top priority right now”. The concerns about the delivery were obvious, but he did not categorically rule out a delivery for the future. “It’s not yet time for us to make a decision,” he said.
