Russia: Eight people still missing after explosion near Moscow

A violent explosion occurs on a factory site northeast of Moscow – allegedly a pyrotechnics warehouse. But armaments production is also suspected at the site. Was it a targeted attack?

Days after an explosion at a suspected arms factory near Moscow, Russia, eight people are still missing. Most of the clean-up work on the territory of the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 kilometers northeast of Moscow, has been completed, the city administration announced on its Telegram channel.

On Wednesday there had been a violent explosion in Sergiyev Posad – according to official information in a pyrotechnics warehouse that was housed on the factory premises. Accordingly, human error should have been the cause. The public prosecutor’s office applied for an arrest warrant for the arrested director of the fireworks company on Friday. This was reported by the Tass Agency, citing the competent court in Sergiyev Posad.

Since, according to a media report, the optical-mechanical plant was involved in the development of a new combat aircraft, it was also speculated that it could have been targeted, for example by a drone.

The Russian authorities recently spoke of a woman killed and more than 80 injured. In the Russian telegram channel Baza, on the other hand, there was talk of more than 150 body parts that had been found in the rubble. Against this background, Baza assumed that in reality 15 or more people could have been killed.

According to the city administration, around 440 apartments and 20 private houses in the area were damaged by the explosion. The hot water supply was interrupted in some nearby houses, it said.
