Federal Family Minister Paus estimated a much lower amount for the annual costs of the planned basic child security. The social association VdK does not consider this sum to be sufficient.
The social association VdK estimates up to 24 billion euros for the planned basic child security. “I think that’s a good, financial framework to implement real basic child security,” said association president Verena Bentele to the editorial network Germany.
To finance this, she suggested taxing large fortunes and inheritances more heavily. Bentele also called for an automated payment of basic child security. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) must create the conditions for this, namely by linking and exchanging tax data with the authorities that pay out the social benefits.
Lindner should not “stand in the way” of an agreement
Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus (Greens) assumed a maximum annual cost of seven billion euros for basic child security in her most recent assumption at the beginning of July. From Bentele’s point of view, this amount is by no means sufficient to finance good basic child security. “I don’t think the argument that the money is simply not there is conclusive. It’s a question of political will,” she warned.
Finance Minister Lindner doubts whether higher benefits from basic child security will serve their purpose. The coalition has been wrestling with the project for months. It is intended to bring together several state benefits for children so that application and payment become less bureaucratic and more beneficiaries can access the money to which they are entitled. Details of the project should be available at the end of August.
The German trade union federation called on the traffic light coalition and especially the finance minister to implement the plans. DGB Vice Anja Piel told the RND: “Finance Minister Lindner must no longer stand in the way of an agreement.” She added: “But not only the FDP, but also the other coalition partners, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz personally at the helm, are responsible for ensuring that a good plan becomes a good law, one that creates more opportunities for all children.”
