The left is in crisis. How is the party going now?
In the crisis of the left, the party executive supports a renewed candidacy of the deputy Dietmar Bartsch for the parliamentary group chairmanship. Only he himself can answer whether Bartsch will actually run for his post again at the beginning of September, said Left Federal Managing Director Tobias Bank.
But Bank added: “I’m sure he’ll make a wise and reasonable decision given the circumstances. And I can’t think of anyone right off the bat with the experience, integrity and authority internally and externally and is so recognized across party lines.”
Co-group leader Amira Mohamed Ali had announced that she would not run again for the group chair because of the dispute over MP Sahra Wagenknecht. Bartsch then left open whether he would apply again. Bank said many discussions were ongoing, particularly with party leaders.
According to Banks, it is “almost decided” that there will be a party convention because of the left-wing crisis. However, the managing director has not yet been able to say when and in what form the consultations should take place. MP Sören Pellmann proposed the convention last week and party leader Janine Wissler supported it.
The party is about to split because Wagenknecht – one of the best-known representatives of the left – has fallen out with the chairmen Wissler and Martin Schirdewan and is considering founding her own party. Behind this is a directional dispute over issues such as climate protection, migration and the Ukraine war.
