In East Germany, the Greens are considered aloof and unworldly – the “Heizungs-Hammer” turned into a PR disaster. Now they dare to make an approach.
Kassem Taher Saleh stands rooted to the spot. “There was something there, wasn’t there?” he asks, looking towards the abyss. Taher Saleh, 30, knows the answer. And yet he seems as if a film is running in fast motion in front of his inner eye. “Here were houses, people lived, there was culture and forests,” says Taher Saleh. “It’s all gone now. A horrible sight.” And a political omen?
The Green member of the Bundestag from Plauen looks at the demolition edge of the Nochten opencast mine. The excavator has already cleared dozens of places in Saxon Lusatia. The parallel with Taher Saleh’s party is obvious. It could tear the ground from under her feet too, here in the East, where this ground was never particularly solid.
