Arson attacks, damage to property and destruction of election posters: a 63-year-old man is said to have carried out numerous attacks in Berlin. According to the police, cross-hostility and anti-Semitism are behind it.
A 63-year-old is said to be responsible for anti-queer and anti-Semitic acts in Berlin. The man fully admitted the crimes last weekend, according to the authorities. He was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for politically motivated arson, the police and prosecutors said. The exact motivation of the German is not yet clear, said the spokesman for the prosecutor. The 63-year-old should be brought before a magistrate on Wednesday.
The man had been targeted by investigators because of previous crimes, especially damage to election posters. In May, charges were filed for seven such cases, including two cases of incitement to hatred. Homophobic hatred was also evident. Because the man left his name on the posters, the investigations in the current cases led to the 63-year-old.
An arrest warrant against him was then issued after an arson attack on an association of lesbian women early Monday morning. A leaflet on the club’s window contained a note with a quotation from the Bible directed against homosexuals.
Notes with this quote were also attached to the memorial to homosexuals persecuted under National Socialism in the Tiergarten on Saturday night. Also on Saturday night, a book box at the “Gleis 17” Holocaust memorial in Berlin’s Grunewald was set on fire. There was an anti-Semitic claim to the attack. Witnesses had reported a man who put a box in the former phone booth that had been converted into a book box and set it on fire.
