The Russian government has expelled the Moscow correspondent for the European edition of the US news magazine “Politico”, Eva Hartog, from the country. “Eva Hartog left Moscow safely after the Russian authorities refused to extend her visa and transfer her press accreditation to Politico,” Politico Europe editor-in-chief Jamil Anderlini wrote in a statement. Hartog is said to have been asked by the Russian Foreign Ministry to leave the country within six days.
According to the news platform, the case of the 35-year-old Dutch woman is the first known expulsion of a foreign journalist from Moscow since the Russian attack on Ukraine more than 17 months ago. In previous years, Russia had repeatedly expelled foreign press representatives from the country. After the invasion, Russia arrested the US journalist from the “Wall Street Journal”, Evan Gershkovich, for alleged espionage, without providing any evidence to support the allegations to date. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
