Dangerous boat crossings: Over 100,000 migrants arrived in Italy this year

The number has more than doubled compared to the same period last year. In the current year, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Tunisia are the countries from which most migrants have arrived.

More than 100,000 people have reached Italy on boats this year. This means that the number has more than doubled compared to the same period last year, according to current figures from the Italian Ministry of the Interior.

By Tuesday, 100,938 people had arrived in Italy by boat – in the same period of 2022 there were 48,295. Also in the current year there were a large number of unaccompanied minors among the migrants (10,290).

According to the Interior Ministry, this is the highest number of arrivals since 2017 in the same reference period. If the trend continues, Italy could even surpass the record number of 2016 by the end of the year. At that time, around 181,000 people arrived. In the current year, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Tunisia are the countries from which most migrants have arrived.

Often devastating accidents during crossings

A number of people keep trying to reach Italy with often unseaworthy boats from Tunisia and Libya. The highly dangerous crossings sometimes lead to devastating boat accidents. According to figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), since the beginning of 2096 people have been missing in the Mediterranean Sea, probably drowned.

In Italy, the high migration figures via the Mediterranean route have been discussed for some time. The right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni therefore decided on a nationwide state of emergency in April. At the European level, Italy is working to conclude agreements with North African countries to consistently prevent migrant boats from leaving for Europe.
