Sudan: Tens of thousands protested against the military coup

On Wednesday the organizers called for nationwide rallies against the military coup and the impending end to democratic reforms. During the protests on Saturday six demonstrators were killed according to the latest information from doctors. On Sunday, security forces arrested the chief executive of the Arab TV channel Al-Jazeera.

Despite the massive deployment of soldiers, police officers and paramilitaries, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in several cities and parts of the north-east African country on Saturday. In the capital Khartoum and the neighboring city of Omdurman, the security forces tried to disperse the demonstrators with tear gas and gunfire, as reported by eyewitnesses and a journalist from the AFP news agency.
