The first televised debate ahead of the US Republican primary will be without Donald Trump. And according to his hints, he may not face his competition later either.
Former US President Donald Trump wants to stay away from the first televised debate of the Republican presidential candidates. The 77-year-old confirmed corresponding media reports on Sunday. “The public knows who I am and what a successful presidency I’ve had,” Trump wrote on his online platform Truth Social.
He also pointed to the huge lead he has in polls of Republican candidates. “I will therefore not participate in the debates,” Trump wrote in capital letters. He indicated that he would not only stay away from the first debate on Wednesday, but also from other internal party television debates of his party.
Donald Trump clearly leads the field of applicants
Trump had previously raised doubts that he would take part in the debate, which was being held by the right-wing news channel Fox News. According to a report by the New York Times, he instead wants to give an interview to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who was fired from the TV station in April. In the past few months, Carlson has published a series of interviews on the online platform Twitter, which has since been renamed “X”, reaching an audience of millions.
Despite the four charges against him, Trump is the clear favorite in the race for the Republican presidential nomination for the 2024 election he gets 62 percent of the votes. Trump’s closest competitor is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is a distant second in the CBS poll with 16 percent.
Seven other Republicans qualified for the TV debate. In addition to DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and African-American Senator Tim Scott can also attend.

Trump, who is accused of electoral conspiracy, among other things, will also be part of the debate “whether he’s present or not,” Fox News host Bret Baier, who will moderate the Republican slugfest, told the Milwaukee Journal sentinels”. Trump’s legal problems are an important topic of conversation. All applicants would be “constantly asked what is happening in the country’s courtrooms.”
The Republican primary begins Jan. 15 in the state of Iowa. The primary winner will challenge incumbent Joe Biden, who is running for re-election, in November 2024.
