Secretary of State: Baerbock defends travel on the government plane

The Foreign Minister canceled her trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji due to a breakdown in the readiness to fly. Nevertheless, she doesn’t really see an alternative in scheduled flights.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed reservations about the increased use of scheduled flights on her trips abroad.

If you are in important political talks on such trips, you cannot simply say that the plane will leave in a few minutes and interrupt the conversation, said the Green politician at an event organized by the news portal “The Pioneer”. It’s about a completely different logistics, “than when you fly on vacation”.

Baerbock had to cancel a trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji last week before she reached her first destination. After a refueling stop in Abu Dhabi, the landing flaps on the A340 of the Bundeswehr’s flight readiness service could not be folded in after take-off. Another attempt gave the same error. Baerbock broke off her journey and returned to Germany by scheduled flight.

In the case of business trips by scheduled flight, for example, the costs are also relevant, Baerbock added. When traveling to the Pacific region, you would have had to pay almost twice for everything if you switched to a regular service. “Hopefully things will work out better next time,” said the Federal Foreign Minister.

Baerbock again called the breakdowns on the government aircraft more than regrettable and annoying. But the even greater damage was that everything that the hosts had prepared was obsolete. She will definitely make up for the trip – but that won’t just be possible in the next few weeks.
