Watch the video: US President Joe Biden visits Maui disaster area.
STORY: Almost two weeks after the devastating forest fires in Hawaii, US President Joe Biden arrived on the hard-hit island of Maui. There he wants to meet with victims, rescue teams and officials to assess the damage and discuss reconstruction. The US President also wants to promise further financial support and appoint a coordinator for disasters at the federal level. The fires on Maui and the neighboring island of Hawaii had severely damaged numerous places, including the tourist town of Lahaina. At least 114 people died in the fires. Biden offered his condolences to the people of Maui: “I can only imagine what it’s like to completely lose your home that has burned to the ground and, more importantly, all the things that are important to you . From the ring he gave you when you were 19, from that special letter that came from your son or daughter.” Biden promised that they would help as long as it was necessary. After the fires broke out, he had not spoken out publicly for almost five days and had been criticized for doing so. Residents have also criticized the local authorities’ crisis management.
