Cannabis: Majority of Germans against legalization

The traffic light coalition wants to relax the ban on cannabis. But according to a Forsa survey, a slim majority of Germans are against it.

The traffic light coalition’s plans to legalize cannabis to a limited extent do not find a majority. Only 44 percent of Germans are in favor of it, 52 percent are against it. That was the result of a Forsa survey for the star.

According to the draft law, which will be discussed in the Bundestag in autumn, adults should in future be allowed to possess 25 grams of cannabis and grow up to three plants for personal consumption. The draft for adults also provides for non-commercial cultivation associations. Young people are prohibited from using cannabis because cannabis is particularly harmful to the growing brain.

Supporters of the Greens are particularly supportive of the government’s plans. The response is lowest among voters from the CDU/CSU and AfD. There are also clear regional differences: in western Germany, 47 percent are in favor of partial legalization, in eastern Germany only 31 percent.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute forsa for the RTL Group Germany on August 17 and 18, 2023. Database: 1002 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points

The exact question was: The federal government wants to allow adults to possess and grow cannabis on a limited basis. There are concerns, however, because this could increase consumption, with all the risks and side effects, especially for young people. How do you see this: should possession and cultivation of cannabis be allowed as planned by the federal government or should it not be allowed as it is now?”
