China has asked Japan to stop the planned discharge of treated cooling water from the Fukushima nuclear ruins into the sea. “China urges Japan to correct its wrong decision,” a spokesman for Beijing’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday. Instead, the water must be disposed of responsibly and under strict international supervision. China will take all necessary measures to protect the marine environment, food safety and public health.
Despite major concerns from fishermen and neighboring countries, Japan announced on Tuesday that it would start the controversial dumping on Thursday if the weather cooperates.
China had already announced weeks ago that it would tighten import regulations for Japanese food in the event of an introduction. As the Chinese customs authority announced, the control of imported food in particular is to be strengthened. In addition, the existing import ban on food from ten Japanese prefectures, including Fukushima, will be maintained.
