During the difficult formation of a government in Spain, the king has named a candidate for the office of prime minister. The lower house will have the decisive word – but that will take time.
The lower house of the Spanish parliament will not debate and vote on the candidacy of former conservative opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo for the post of prime minister until September 26 and 27. This was announced by the President of the Lower House, Francina Armengol, on Wednesday in the chamber, the Congreso de los Diputados. This will give Feijóo from the People’s Party PP enough time to negotiate with other parties, Armengol explained. An earlier date had been expected in Spain.
After two days of consultations with various party leaders, King Felipe VI. asked the 61-year-old Feijóo to form the new government on Tuesday evening. In the first round, the candidate needs an absolute majority of at least 176 yes votes. In the second ballot, a simple majority is sufficient. Despite his PP’s victory in the July 23 snap general election, Feijóo has not yet had enough support from other parties to succeed Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The socialist therefore calculates his chances of staying in office.
