Manuela Schwesig has been confirmed in her office as head of government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. But not all MPs of the red-red coalition voted for them.
Surprise in the Schwerin state parliament: When Manuela Schwesig (SPD) was elected Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Monday, not all members of the new red-red government camp voted for the 47-year-old.
Schwesig received 41 out of 79 votes in the first ballot. That was enough – but the alliance of SPD and Left has 43 votes. The parliamentary managing director of the CDU state parliamentary group, Sebastian Ehlers, commented on this on Twitter with the words: “The false start for the left-wing coalition is perfect.” The parliamentary group chairman of the FDP, René Domke, stated: “The trust of the government groups is not one hundred percent.”
Observers had taken it for granted that Manuela Schwesig would get all the votes of the red-red camp. After noiseless coalition negotiations, special party conferences of the SPD and Linker on Saturday almost unanimously approved the coalition agreement. Some also did not want to rule out the possibility that they could receive one or the other vote from the opposition.
The Rostock political scientist Wolfgang Muno also reacted with surprise to the election result for Schwesig in the state parliament. Previously, no criticism from one side or the other of the new government camp had been expressed, he told the German Press Agency. It is open who has refused Schwesig his or her vote. According to Muno, it could be SPD members who were dissatisfied with the “personality cult” surrounding Schwesig, or leftists who were dissatisfied with the coalition agreement. For the left, only two small ministries and the content of the contract were “not the big hit”. “Probably nobody will dare to take cover,” he said, because his or her career would then be over.
Schwesig’s government is to be appointed on Monday afternoon and also sworn in in the state parliament. For the first time in the history of the state, the cabinet has more women (five) than men (four). The first meeting of the new cabinet is scheduled for the evening. Manuela Schwesig took her oath of office in the state parliament with the religious addition “so help me God”.
In the state elections on September 26, the SPD emerged as the clear winner with 39.6 percent. The Social Democrats had tailored the state election campaign very much to the person of Schwesig. The left brought in a historically bad result with 9.9 percent. Nevertheless, the SPD chose them as a government partner. There are numerous content overlaps, for example in educational, social and economic policy. The Social Democrats had previously ruled with the CDU for 15 years.
In the MV state parliament with 79 members, the red-red alliance has a majority of four votes. The electoral term lasts five years.
