A US Army plane crashed during a military exercise in northern Australia. Three occupants were killed and five others are in critical condition.
At least three people on board died after a US military plane crashed off the north coast of Australia. A spokesman for the US Marine Corp confirmed three dead and five others of the 23 people on board were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in critical condition, according to a statement obtained by the Australian news agency AAP.
Accordingly, the Boeing MV-22B Osprey machine crashed on the island of Melville in the Northern Territory during the military exercise called Predators Run on Sunday morning (local time). All of the inmates are US military personnel, the territory’s Premier, Natasha Fyles, said in a news conference. After the crash, both planes and helicopters are in rescue operations to treat the injured and bring them to Darwin. The “Code Brown” was activated in the hospital there – the highest alert level in Australian hospitals.
According to the AAP, around 150 US Marines are stationed in Darwin. They regularly take part in joint military exercises with Australian and Filipino soldiers.
“Australia and the US are working together on this matter,” Fyles said. According to the current state of knowledge, no residents of the very remote region were injured in the crash. The mission ended against the background of “catastrophic bush fires”.
