The party leadership supports him without protesting. His employees give him ample rest breaks. His strategists keep him away from the press. But there is rumbling at the base. For many, President Joe Biden, 80, is simply too old.
If Joe Biden has loyal supporters, then it is here: in Scranton, the working-class town in Pennsylvania where he once grew up as the son of a casual worker. Here a section of road is named after him – the “Joe Biden Way”. Here is a sign in front of the light blue wooden house with the number 4664: “From this house to the White House. You are standing in front of the childhood home of the 46th President of the USA, Joe Biden.”
And immediately, a friendly white-haired neighbor steps off his porch, just two houses away, and offers to take photos of the visitor in front of the three-story building. “I always do that for visitors. We’ve had Japanese, French, Brazilians,” he says proudly.
