The Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, Carsten Breuer, expects rapid progress with the planned stationing of a German brigade in Lithuania. During a visit to the Baltic country on Monday, he made it clear that the planning process should be completed this year and that both states want to enter the “implementation phase” in 2024.
“We will have a plan by the end of this quarter,” Breuer said at a press conference in Vilnius after meeting with Lithuanian Army Chief Valdemaras Rupsys. Germany’s top soldier conceded that the plan was “ambitious” and that the issues to be discussed were “very diverse and admittedly very complex”. “But I know that we can stick to our schedule,” said the general.
The federal government want round 4000 soldiers as independently capable of acting and combat-ready unit in Lithuania station. This is intended to meet the NATO ally’s need for increased deterrence. This is also a reaction to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
