In his forthcoming novel, Russian writer Viktor Erofeev, one of the country’s best-known, describes the rise of Putin – and foreshadows the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin. A conversation about the soul of Russia and why he believes Putin knew about Prigozhin’s plans.
Viktor Erofeyev is one of Russia’s best-known writers and knows his way around psychopaths: his father was Stalin’s translator and later his ambassador in Paris. When Putin invaded Ukraine, Erofeyev fled his homeland with his family. Today he lives in exile in Germany. His latest novel will be published in German in October and describes the rise of Putin. It’s called “The Big Gopnik” – where “Gopnik” means “petty criminal” in Russian. Again and again Erofeyev proves to be an extremely clairvoyant prophet. This is also the case in his last work: Prigozhin finds death on the back pages.
Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin is dead. What kind of person was he?
On the one hand, Prigozhin was very intelligent and quick to react, but on the other hand he was also very stupid. He won general admiration through his brutality. But when you heard him talk, he was just being very vulgar.
