The controversy over abortion rights in the United States repeatedly heats up. Because five opponents are said to have forced their way into an abortion clinic, they could now go to prison for a long time.
Five abortion opponents in the United States have been convicted by a federal court for blocking access to an abortion clinic in the US capital Washington with chains, ropes and pieces of furniture. They each face up to 11 years in prison, three years under supervision and a fine of up to $ 350,000 (around 322,000 euros), as the US Department of Justice announced on Tuesday (local time). As is customary in the United States, the sentence will be announced at a later date.
The five men and women, aged between 25 and 67, reportedly traveled to Washington from different states in October 2022 to take part in the clinic blockade. They forced their way into the building and filmed their action with a cell phone and posted it on Facebook. Patients and clinic staff were intimidated and violently prevented from receiving or providing certain health services.
The jury found the group conspired to violate the civil rights of others. The five also violated a law that stipulates free access to health services. Abortion rights have been the subject of heated debates in the United States. The trial of four other people charged in connection with the same blockade is set to begin next week.
