Accident: Scholz with an eye patch: “Looks worse than it is”

Two days after his accident, Chancellor Scholz showed his injuries for the first time. He has abrasions distributed over the right side of his face, the eye remains covered. He takes it easy – and with humor.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz wears a black eye patch over his right eye after his fall while jogging because of his facial injuries. The SPD politician showed his injury to the public for the first time two days after the accident.

On the Internet platform X he distributed a photo on which abrasions can be seen distributed over the entire right side of the face. But he seems to be taking it easy. “Thanks for the well wishes, looks worse than it is!” he writes, adding, “Who has the damage… Can’t wait to see the memes.”

Memes are images that are common on social media, often with humorous comments. There was plenty of that throughout the day. The Pirate Party rejoiced at X for the eyepatch, commenting “We are chancellors!”

Scholz’s own parliamentary group wrote in response to his recent comment, “The issue of nuclear power is a dead horse in Germany” and the Scholz photo: “You should see the horse.”

An X user appointed Scholz as a new member of the sea shanty band Santiano from Schleswig-Holstein: “Arr, he’s a real pirate.”

Accident on main route

The 65-year-old Scholz fell while jogging at the weekend and therefore canceled his participation in the election campaign of the Hessian SPD and its top candidate Nancy Faeser on Sunday. The accident is said to have occurred on the Chancellor’s main route at his place of residence in Potsdam.

Scholz stumbled, was unable to support himself in time and therefore fell on his face, wrote the “Bild” newspaper. When he goes jogging, he is always accompanied by bodyguards who were able to quickly help him.

In the evening at the reception in the church

Regardless of the fall injuries to the face, Scholz attended the St. Michael annual reception of the Catholic Church in Berlin in the evening. “It’s fine,” he replied when journalists asked him how he was doing upon arrival. Scholz wore his black patch over his right eye, which covered the biggest injuries after his fall.

“Your presence is really a very special sign of appreciation, especially under these circumstances,” said the chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference, Georg Bätzing, when he welcomed the Chancellor. He sat in the front row together with the CDU chairman Friedrich Merz. Before the event began, Scholz was surrounded by photographers and cameramen.

Scholz tries to make time for sport two to three times a week, as he writes on his website as a member of the Bundestag. He also likes to row when his busy schedule allows. He also goes hiking with his wife Britta Ernst on vacation and occasionally rides his bike. However, he is a late starter when it comes to sports. “When I was at school I hated sports, now I jog as often as I can.”
