The traffic light coalition debated funding for months – now basic child welfare is to come. According to the Federal Minister of Finance, the legislation is making rapid progress.
The draft law on basic child security could possibly be passed by the Federal Cabinet as early as next week. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) said yesterday evening on the ZDF program “Maybrit Illner” about the question of the date: “I assume that this can happen at the next cabinet meeting.” He also contradicted the assessment that there were still unanswered questions between the ministries. “The technical implementation issues are solved by the civil servants; there was no political disagreement.”
Lindner and Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) had struggled for months about financing basic child welfare. After both sides had reached an agreement in principle, it was still unclear when the cabinet would approve the corresponding draft law. While Paus initially mentioned September 13th as the date, there was recent talk that the Ministry of Finance needed four more weeks to examine the law.
