USA: Trump collects donations for ex-lawyer Giuliani

Together with Donald Trump, he tried to prevent Joe Biden’s victory from being confirmed in 2020. Now the lawyer Rudy Giuliani has to answer in court – and needs a lot of money to do so.

According to media reports, former US President Donald Trump held a fundraiser for his ex-lawyer Rudy Giuliani. The proceeds from the fundraising dinner at Trump’s Bedminster golf club in New Jersey will help the 79-year-old lawyer pay millions in legal fees, CNN reported.

Giuliani is at the center of several proceedings surrounding the 2020 presidential election. In August, extensive charges were brought against him and 18 other people in connection with attempted election fraud in the state of Georgia – including Trump himself.

Giuliani’s son Andrew told WABC that donations of more than a million dollars (more than 933,000 euros) had already been pledged before the dinner on Thursday evening. That’s not enough to cover his father’s legal fees. Especially with regard to the lawsuit in Georgia, it is enough “to put together a team of really strong lawyers who can actually fight it.” Trump has also agreed to host another fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in the fall or winter.

Giuliani, who was mayor of New York from 1994 to 2001, has been considered one of the most controversial people in the USA since the 2020 presidential election. Before Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Giuliani helped fire up the crowds at a rally. As Trump’s personal lawyer, he was one of the driving forces who spread unproven claims of fraud after the election and wanted to prevent confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory. Dozens of lawsuits filed by the Trump camp to challenge the election results failed.
