It is a done deal from Monday in Upper Austria and Salzburg, regardless of whether a nationwide comes or not. In Vorarlberg, too, there are increasing voices for an immediate lockdown. In any case, Carinthia wants to test a “short, hard” test. People in Tyrol and Styria were negative.
Upper Austria’s governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) announced on Thursday that his state, together with neighboring Salzburg, will go into a lockdown on Monday. His Salzburg colleague Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) also wants to close the schools. Both ÖVP politicians had long resisted harsh corona measures despite the calls for help from the hospitals.

Also from Vorarlberg came calls for a “tight, short lockdown for everyone”. In addition to ÖVP club chairman Roland Breakfast, the green government partner in the country and the SPÖ were in favor. Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) referred on Thursday to ongoing deliberations of the states and tomorrow’s governor’s conference.
“General, short, hard”
Almost the same thing was over Carinthia to be heard: “A general, short, but hard lockdown should be checked due to the dramatic increase in numbers,” said Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) on Thursday. This is to be discussed at the (tomorrow) state governors’ conference. “However, more than just a singular measure is required,” Kaiser continued: “Above all, it will be important to do everything to force first and third vaccinations.”
According to reports, he was reluctant Styrian Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer (ÖVP), who meanwhile wants to campaign for a nationwide vaccination requirement at the governor’s conference, as the “Kleine Zeitung” reported and the Styrian economics and tourism district councilor Barbara Eibinger-Miedl (ÖVP) confirmed on the sidelines of an event in Graz. This is the only way to get Austria “out of the lockdown spiral”.
Platter versus lockdown
For the time being, he didn’t want to comment burgenländische Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ). He did not want to do anything about the media, it was said from his office. Also from Lower Austria it was said that the media did not want to anticipate the talks.
On the other hand, it was negative Tyrol Governor Günther Platter (ÖVP). The previous position of governor applies, according to the Platters office. So far, Platter had always vehemently rejected a general lockdown – and urged that the focus above all be on increasing the vaccination quota.
