Navy: Major exercise “Northern Coasts” started in the Baltic Sea

Against the backdrop of massive tensions between Russia and NATO, the major “Northern Coasts” exercise begins. The exercise has been going on since 2007, but there is something new about it this time.

A two-week naval maneuver under German leadership has begun off the coast of Latvia and Estonia. The exercise started as planned, said a Navy spokeswoman in Rostock.

This year, more than 3,000 soldiers from 14 countries are taking part in the “Northern Coasts” exercise, which has been taking place since 2007, including Italy, France, Canada and the USA in addition to those bordering the Baltic Sea. The maneuver group includes around 30 ships and boats – including a submarine -, around 20 aircraft and various land units.

The exercise, led by a staff in Rostock around 1,000 kilometers away, is intended to improve the allies’ common understanding of the Baltic Sea. For the first time, according to the Navy, “Northern Coasts” is based on an alliance defense scenario.

The units, which had previously assembled in the port of Riga and off the coast, headed for the open sea for the first exercises. According to the Navy, this involves mine clearing, sea target shooting, submarine hunting, electronic warfare, cooperation with reconnaissance aircraft, landing operations, protection of ports and much more.
