Conflicts: Iran: Protest leaders arrested and tanks relocated

The death of Jina Mahsa Amini sparked the worst protests in decades. Now there are said to be arrests – including in Germany. But a lot is also happening in Iran.

Iran’s intelligence service has reported the arrest of several alleged “leaders” of protests abroad. The justice portal Misan published a video that is said to show confessions from several men.

They appeared as “leaders” of demonstrations in the USA, Germany and Great Britain, the report said. It was not said when or where the secret service arrested the men. As usual in these cases, the authenticity of the confessions cannot be independently verified.

The report was released shortly before the first anniversary of protest icon Jina Mahsa Amini’s death. The young woman died in police custody on September 16, 2022, after moral watchdogs had previously arrested Amini because of an allegedly ill-fitting headscarf. Her death sparked the worst protests in decades. The situation in Iran is tense around the anniversary of the start of the protests last autumn.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards move tanks to Iraq’s border

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) are deploying tanks and artillery to the border with Iraq. Images and videos from the Tasnim news agency, which is close to the elite unit, showed military convoys on the way to the border area.

According to the report, the background is an ultimatum from the Iranian government to Iraq. Tehran is calling on its neighboring country to fight Kurdish separatist groups.

According to information from Tehran, Iraq committed itself to disarming Kurdish resistance groups on its own territory in an agreement between the two countries at the end of August. Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said at the time that there was an ultimatum until September 19th to implement the plans. Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein arrived in Tehran today for talks.
