Freedom fighter Varian Fry once saved hundreds of people from the Nazis. He had help, including from Justus Rosenberg. He has now died at the age of 100.
Justus Rosenberg, who once helped the freedom fighter Varian Fry to bring hundreds of people to safety from the National Socialists, is dead.
The previously last living helper of Fry died at the age of 100, reported the “New York Times” on Thursday, citing his wife Karin.
Bard College, where Rosenberg had taught to the end, also confirmed his death. Accordingly, the professor of languages and literature, who turned 100 in January and had only published a book about his time at Fry’s side last year, died on October 30th with his family.
Rosenberg was a helper in the rescue network
Rosenberg was born in Gdansk in 1921, his parents were non-practicing Jews and the language at home was German. Before the Nazis, Rosenberg fled to France, where he attended school and university.
Through acquaintances he finally met the US journalist Fry (1907-1967) in the south of the country, who immediately hired him to help set up his rescue network, with which he wanted to enable hundreds of people to escape from the National Socialists. These included, for example, the philosopher Hannah Arendt, the artists Marc Chagall and Max Ernst and the writers Heinrich and Golo Mann.
