Lots of inquiries, missing masks and a session in crisis mode

The fact that Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP) announced the lockdown in the first answer to a Neos request was almost forgotten in yesterday’s state parliament session. The speeches were prepared, the strategies for the parties were clear: ÖVP and FPÖ defended their work, SPÖ, Greens and Neos criticized them extensively.

The announcement by Stelzer only led to a reaction among the MFG MPs: Party chairman Joachim Aigner’s jaw dropped down. This was visible because he and his two party colleagues did not wear a mask. And did not deviate from it despite repeated requests. “I refer to the exercise of the free mandate,” said Aigner.

The fact that all parties had agreed to wear a mask the day before in a meeting was ignored. There were no consequences for this, but there is sure to be an intensive discussion in the next presidential meeting. The statements of MFG club chairman Manuel Krautgartner also triggered violent reactions. He said that the vaccination had not been approved, that it might render it sterile and that it was a “human experiment”. Incidentally, similar posts on Facebook led to the MFG Upper Austria page being blocked.

Later in the debate and after further MFG speeches, Green MP Ulrike Schwarz replied clearly and emotionally: “The coronavirus cannot be beaten with false numbers. Let us protect the health system from your publicly dangerous statements!”

Deputy governor Manfred Haimbuchner (FP) also went too far with the statements of the MFG mandataries about the supposedly free intensive care beds: “It’s not about any percent, but also about the nursing staff.” Once again he was promoting an antibody study and had brought his laboratory results with him to prove it. The fact that this is no longer valid as a “recovery” certificate is not in order.

The most frequently asked person in the room was LH Deputy. and Health Councilor Christine Haberlander (VP). She referred extensively to the measures taken and defended the steps. For the SPÖ this was not enough, for them there is a clear person responsible for the late action and the lack of a vaccination campaign: “It is the political failure of the ÖVP and Thomas Stelzer.”

If Stelzer had put his energy into the vaccination campaign during the election campaign, you would look different today, criticized Neos club chairman Felix Eypeltauer. (eiba)
