Donald Trump likes to give things out verbally. Now a special investigator wants to have the former US President banned from making intimidating statements in court.
After the indictment of former US President Donald Trump in connection with attempted election fraud and the storming of the US Capitol in January 2021, special prosecutor Jack Smith asked the responsible court to restrict Trump’s out-of-court statements on the case. Since the jury indicted Trump in the case, the 77-year-old has made public statements attacking and intimidating the court, potential witnesses and prosecutors, according to a motion filed by Smith on Friday. In doing so, Trump could “undermine the integrity of the process and influence the jury.”
Smith asked the court to issue a “narrow order” barring Trump from making certain statements about his case. Trump, who denies all allegations and portrays himself as the victim of a politically motivated campaign, reacted indignantly: “They let things leak, they lie and sue me – and now they want to ban me from speaking?” Trump raged on Friday online platform “Truth Social”, which he co-founded.
Charges were filed against the Republican in the case at the beginning of August. He is accused, among other things, of initiating a conspiracy against the United States.
The trial in Washington in connection with the storming of the US Capitol and attempted election fraud is scheduled to begin on March 4, 2024. It is one of four criminal proceedings against Trump, who wants to run for the Republicans again in the presidential election next November.
