Afghanistan is the only country in the world where there are restrictions on women’s education. This is unacceptable, said UN Secretary General Guterres.
In view of the ban on girls’ education in secondary schools in Afghanistan two years ago, the United Nations has called on the ruling Taliban there to reopen secondary schools for girls. “Girls belong in school,” wrote UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the platform X, formerly Twitter, on Monday. “Let her back in.” He called the closure of girls’ schools from the 7th grade onwards an “unjustifiable violation of human rights that is causing long-term damage to the entire country.”
The human rights organization Amnesty International also called on the Islamists to reopen schools immediately. The future and dreams of thousands of Afghan girls are at stake, the organization wrote on X.
Back in power since August 2021
The Islamist Taliban have been back in power in Afghanistan since August 2021. Since then, they have severely restricted the rights of women and girls, especially in the area of education. Girls are only allowed to go to school until the 6th grade and are no longer allowed to attend universities.
Afghanistan is the only country in the world where there are restrictions on women’s education. The Taliban explain this by saying that this is not compatible with their interpretation of Islamic law, Sharia. The ban sparked condemnation around the world. It continues to be seen as the biggest obstacle to their government being recognized internationally.
