When Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida presented his new cabinet a few days ago, many people were surprised. With only five female ministers, the country lags behind the quota of women in most other G7 countries.
Kishida has continued to fill the most important positions in the financial and economic sectors with men, so that women are not paved the way to the office of prime minister: This pattern has already existed through previous governments.
Women are vastly outnumbered in government
At the beginning of the year, 11.3 percent of countries had female heads of state and 9.8 percent have female heads of government. Countries, especially in Europe, are led by women. Europe and North and South America have the most female cabinet members. Hardly anyone would have expected to be number one in the ranking of states with the most female ministers.
