Zelenskyj before the UN: Russia’s representative is diligently taking notes

In their speeches to the General Assembly, the presidents of the United States and Ukraine seek to win approval from those who are undecided. But there are also allies who have to take domestic politics into account.

The president took his time. It wasn’t until 22 minutes into his speech at the United Nations that Joe Biden brought up the war in Ukraine. One can assume that there is a dramaturgical tension behind this to increase the tension. Or a concession to many governments, especially in the global south, who, in view of other international problems, think that too much attention is being paid to the Russian war of aggression anyway. Joe Biden also kept Volodymyr Zelenskyj, who was seated in the plenary session of the General Assembly, waiting for 22 minutes. The Ukrainian president heard what Joe Biden had to say to the rest of the world: a plea for development aid and climate protection, for reforming the United Nations and strengthening the World Bank, for fair competition with China and strengthening international cooperation. Only then did Biden turn to the Russian war of aggression.
