Upper Austria remains with a longer lockdown

On Thursday, Upper Austria submitted all the details about the lockdown from Monday. These continue to apply, the nationwide lockdown is no different, stated Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP) yesterday. The only difference: the end date. While the federal government has limited the lockdown to 20 days for the time being, in Upper Austria it will definitely last until December 17th at least: “For reasons of caution, we are sticking to our timeline.”

He was satisfied with the nationwide lockdown: “I give them great credit for the fact that the other federal states, although some of them are still in a different situation, are going with them.” Stelzer and LH-Stv. Christine Haberlander (VP) also announced the mandatory vaccination. Because: “The vaccination progress is still far too slow.” During the past month, the rate for first stitches rose from 59.9 to 65 percent and for full immunizations from 57.5 to 60.8 percent. Haberlander announced that the vaccination range will be increased. She calculated that there are currently 384 unvaccinated Covid patients in Upper Austria’s hospitals, 84 of the 109 Covid intensive care patients are not vaccinated.

LH-Deputy spoke clearly against compulsory vaccination. Manfred Haimbuchner (FP) announced that he would “use all legal means to protect the rule of law and its citizens of this country from arbitrariness and abuse of power”. When asked whether this is not in contradiction to the government program – in which one commits to the implementation of the federal guidelines for combating pandemics – Stelzer said: “That is unpleasant, but does not prevent us from doing what is necessary.”

For State Councilor Birgit Gerstorfer (SP), the nationwide lockdown was “inevitable” and the compulsory vaccination was a “tough step, but necessary”. She cites the “total failure of the governor” as the reason for the measures. For Neos country spokesman Felix Eypeltauer, the measures are a consequence of “hesitation, tactics and sheer failure of leadership”.

Health spokeswoman Ulrike Schwarz (Greens) said: “The escalation of recent weeks has shown that we can only break the pandemic vicious circle with the most powerful tools.”
