Open schools with the option to stay at home

Open schools with the option to stay at home

The question of whether the schools are open led to a lot of confusion yesterday. On the one hand there were statements from state politicians that the schools would be closed, on the other hand the position of the Ministry of Education that the schools would be open. Last evening, Minister of Education Heinz Faßmann (VP) finally made it clear in a press conference: “The essential thing is: the school is open, it not only provides care, but also lessons.” Children who stay at home do not have to show a certificate and must not be at a disadvantage.

A complete lockdown is not possible at schools, according to the minister: “That confronts working parents with unsolvable tasks.” In addition, when teaching at home, the educational gap “opens up even further” due to the different requirements. And: “Children need encounters with their peers.” Due to the many tests – the number of which will be increased again – the schools are a “controlled place”. In addition, the protective measures are tightened, there is a continuous mask requirement.

However, they want to “detach” the classes and call for children to be left at home if possible. These children are taught using digital teaching or learning packages: “Of course, that varies depending on the school location and grade.” So there are “normal lessons that also take the children home with them”. When imparting new content, he appeals to the teachers “to be considerate of the circumstances”; there should be no written performance assessments during this time.

Distance learning will apply from Monday at universities and technical colleges.
