State election: Bavaria: Free voters and Greens tied in survey

Currently, 14 percent of those surveyed would choose the Free Voters and the Greens. Meanwhile, another party has to worry about entering the state parliament.

Two and a half weeks before the state elections in Bavaria, a survey shows that the fight for second place is neck-and-neck. According to a survey by the opinion research institute Civey for the “Augsburger Allgemeine” and “Spiegel”, free voters and the Greens each get 14 percent. The CSU of party leader and Prime Minister Markus Söder is way ahead with 38 percent.

After the leaflet affair surrounding their boss Hubert Aiwanger, the Free Voters were recently at 17 percent in surveys by other institutes, which is a record high. The CSU achieved 36 percent in the last two surveys.

If there were a state election next Sunday, according to the new Civey survey, 13 percent of those surveyed would vote for the AfD. As in previous surveys, the SPD is at 9 percent. The FDP remains worried about entering the state parliament: with 4 percent, it would just fail to meet the five percent hurdle and would therefore no longer be in the state parliament, which will be elected on October 8th.

For the representative survey, around 5,000 Bavarians aged 18 and over were interviewed online between September 13th and 20th. Civey gives the margin of error at 2.5 percentage points.

In principle, election surveys only reflect opinions at the time of the survey and are not predictions of the election outcome. They are also always subject to uncertainty. Among other things, weakening party ties and increasingly short-term voting decisions make it more difficult for opinion research institutes to weight the data collected.
