Like other left-wing heads of state in Latin America, Brazil’s president refrains from criticizing Moscow. Lula has now met his Ukrainian counterpart in New York for the first time.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva drew a positive conclusion after his first personal meeting with Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelensky. “We had a good conversation about the importance of paths to peace and agreed to always maintain open dialogue between our countries,” Lula wrote yesterday after the meeting in New York on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter was.
Zelensky wrote: “This was an important meeting with Lula. After our honest and constructive discussion, we have instructed our diplomatic teams to develop the next steps for our bilateral relations and peace efforts. The representatives of Brazil will continue to participate in the meetings on Ukrainian peace efforts participate.”
Lula had recently repeatedly called for an international mediation initiative to resolve the war in Ukraine, but without making any concrete proposals. Similar to other left-wing heads of state in Latin America, Lula criticized the Russian attack on Ukraine, but refrained from using clear words towards Moscow.
Brazil also rejects supporting Ukraine with weapons. “We must recognize that the supply of more weapons undermines the chances for peace,” Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira told the UN Security Council yesterday. “There is no military solution to this war.”
