Nuclear power: New elections in Pakistan: Election Commission announces date

A dissolved parliament, the ex-prime minister in custody and a severe economic crisis: In politically turbulent times, elections are soon to take place in Pakistan.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has scheduled new elections for January, more than a month after the dissolution of Parliament. The parliamentary election will now take place in the last week of January next year, according to a statement from the Commission spokesman that was shared on the online platform X (formerly Twitter).

With the dissolution of parliament at the beginning of August, the old government resigned in Pakistan. New elections must generally take place within 90 days. However, in the same month, the electoral commission announced the delay of the parliamentary elections, citing a recalculation of constituencies. A transitional government is currently running the nuclear power’s affairs. In recent weeks, the USA and the EU have called on Pakistan to hold fair and timely elections in order not to worsen the economic crisis in the South Asian country.

The new election is taking place in politically turbulent times. The country with more than 240 million inhabitants is in a serious economic crisis. In addition, a power struggle has been raging between influential family dynasties and former Prime Minister Imran Khan for months. The former cricket star is currently in custody amid an investigation into the alleged leaking of sensitive diplomatic information.
