Useful or too dangerous? The new EU climate commissioner does not believe in achieving climate neutrality without nuclear energy. Member states continue to wrestle with the future role of technology.
The new EU Climate Commissioner Maros Sefcovic believes nuclear power is very important in the fight against climate change. “If you look at numerous projections for 2050 and the period after, I honestly haven’t seen any forecast that says climate neutrality could be achieved without nuclear energy,” he said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to the newspaper “Welt”. .
The 57-year-old took over the position of climate commissioner from the Dutchman Frans Timmermans in August. He had left the EU Commission to run as the top candidate of the red-green electoral alliance in the parliamentary elections in his home country.
Sefcovic emphasized which energy sources an EU country uses is a sovereign decision of the respective governments. “We see some member states investing in the construction of new nuclear power plants recently,” said the Slovakian. There is great economic interest in developing small reactors, which he believes are an option for the future.
There is always a struggle at the EU level about the future role of nuclear power. Countries like France see this as a useful technology for making energy production climate-friendly. Germany and Austria, however, are critical of nuclear power in the EU.
