Sochi, Russia’s Black Sea resort, is booming. This also has to do with the attack on Ukraine.
Maybe the Soviet party leaders once sat in the rotunda, on the top floor, behind head-high windows, maybe in the evenings there was borscht, dumplings and later compote, maybe even red caviar on white bread or sweet sparkling wine from the Crimea. Behind palm trees and cypresses the sea shone in the distance.
The sanatorium on the Black Sea, named after the Soviet official Sergei Kirov, was not for the working masses. Anyone who relaxed here, playing billiards or in the spas, had something to say in the country. The holiday resort sat on a slope near Sochi like a white fairytale castle.
